Sustainability and the Environment

We recognise that our activities have an impact on the environment in terms of the use of raw materials, emissions to air and water, waste generation, and seek to minimise this as far as is reasonably practicable.

Our Sustainability Vision

• To develop and continuously improve sustainable practices throughout our business through sustainable, profitable, and responsible growth, while leaving a smaller footprint on the world to benefit future generations.

• Arthur Branwell & Co Ltd champions resilience to climate change throughout our supply chain and business activities.

Our Sustainability Strategy

• Ensure we always consider the environmental impact on our key decisions. Deliver service, innovation, quality, and performance sustainably.

Rainforest Alliance

Rainforest Alliance has certified Arthur Branwell & Co. Limited. With the Rainforest Alliance’s 2020 Certification Program, they are aiming to foster not only transparency but also responsible business practises by companies throughout the supply chain.

The Rainforest Alliance certification program is committed to protecting and improving the following:

  • Forests: Forests are critical to the survival of every living thing on Earth. Our training and certification program require best practices for protecting forests and fighting deforestation. Cutting down trees to expand farmland is not allowed; in fact, farmers are encouraged to plant more trees on Rainforest Alliance Certified farms.
  • Climate: Standing forests are also excellent at storing carbon and keeping it out of our atmosphere (which is our best way to alleviate climate change). That’s why our certification program promotes responsible land management methods that increase and conserve the number of trees. In addition, the farming practices embedded in our training help farmers face climate-related disasters like droughts and flooding.
  • Human Rights: Certification supports the rights of farmworkers and their communities. Our program provides robust tools for preventing child labor, forced labor, poor working conditions, low wages, gender inequality, and the violation of Indigenous land rights—and identifying and addressing these issues when they do occur. Although no program alone can guarantee protection against human rights abuses, we are committed to working with local experts, companies, and labor organizations to address the root causes.
  • Livelihoods: People and nature need each other. Improving opportunities for smallholder farmers and forest communities is the most effective way to lift rural people out of poverty and protect critically important landscapes. Our certification program is a useful tool to help improve farmer incomes.

RSPO

Palm Oil

Palm oil has had a bad press, being blamed for the destruction of sensitive habitats including rainforests.

However, that isn’t the whole story, palm oil also makes a major contribution to sustainable food supply. Palm oil accounts for less than 7% of land use for growing vegetable oils. Palm oil provides 38% of global production of oils and fats, which makes palm oil the highest yielding vegetable oil, using just one tenth of the land resource required by alternatives.

So, palm oil on its own isn’t the problem but non-sustainable palm oil, produced by rogue operators who destroy irreplaceable habitats for their farming is.

We use palm oil from Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) – certified sources.

Waste

Our waste plastic and cardboard is baled and sent for recycling.

All non-recyclable refuse from our head office is sent either to an Energy Recovery Facility or to produce Refuse Derived Fuel. The waste is turned into energy to power homes and businesses, achieving virtually zero landfill.

Wind Energy

All of our electricity comes from sustainable sources.

We’re consistantley working to reduce our consumption of all forms of energy.

Sustainable Product Development

Responsible sourcing, healthy eating and clean label declaration are all increasingly important to consumers, our technical team can work with you to deliver these goals.

We use our know-how and our experience to work alongside our customers to fully understand their needs and precisely provide  the right ingredient, in the right format for their particular process. Often this requires developing new bespoke systems to create the correct texture, taste, performance, viability or appearance of our customers’ products and requirements in relation to sustainable practises.

We build on the various synergies between different ingredients to develop an optimised product, tailored specifically to an individual recipe or to a particular production process. Our development work is undertaken either at our modern laboratories and technical service centre at Epping in the UK or at our clients’ own premises, by our team of fully qualified food scientists, technologists and technicians.
